The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
V2; 2007
My Rating: B- (65/100)
Best Tracks: "To The Dogs or Whoever", "Right Moves", "The Temptation of Adam", "Wait For Love", "Still Beating", "Empty Hearts"
Like any world conqueror, Ritter oversteps his reach.
TRACK NOTES
"To The Dog or Whoever" (4.5/5)
- Amazing lyrics here. Very Dylan-esque.
- "Can you love me like the crosses love the nape of the neck?"
- A fun opener. Sounds like the band might derail at any moment.
"Mind’s Eye" (3.5/5)
- Very live feel on this one.
- A bit more of a classic rock feel. Some power pop influence.
- That being said, I’m not particularly crazy about this one.
"Right Moves" (4.5/5)
- Catchy and poppy.
- Goes to show that even Ritter’s average lyrics are 50 times better than another musician’s good lyrics.
"The Temptation of Adam" (4/5)
- OK – I’m going to say it – I think he (unintentionally) lifted this melody from "I Will Follow You Into The Dark." Anyone else hear that?
- "Pretend this giant missile/Is an old oak tree/Carve our name and hearts into the warhead…"
- Love the lyrics, even if they are a bit overwrought.
"Open Doors" (3.5/5)
- Another track that feels very live.
- It also feels like filler.
"Rumors/Edge of the World" (3/5)
- Horns – that’s a new thing for Josh.
- Again, filler.
"Wait for Love" (4/5)
- Nice melody.
- As with many tracks here, this one feels underdeveloped.
"Real Long Distance" (3/5)
- So I’m starting to think that the tracks that feel live feel that way because they were recorded without much thought.
- Basically, filler again.
"Next to the Last Romantic/Moons" (4/5)
- Not much to say about this one. It’s decent.
- "Moons" is barely noticeable.
"Still Beating" (4.5/5)
- Pretty melody.
- Love the trumpet, the shimmering guitar, and the woodwinds.
"Empty Hearts" (4.5/5)
- I hear a lot of Springsteen in this one.
- Great tune. Probably the best on the album.
"Wait For Love (You Know You Will)" (4/5)
- Yeah, it’s good.
- I don’t know though, I guess it just feels a bit…contrived? Planned?
- The tune is fine, it’s that the performance/production feels off.
ALBUM NOTES
- First off: amazing lyrics. See "To The Dogs…" and "The Temptation of Adam."
- Also, it’s got a big sound. The whole album bears more than a passing aesthetic resemblance to Wilco’s Summerteeth.
- I believe the recording process was a whirlwind. The album feels very live, especially on "Open Doors", "Wait for Love", "Mind’s Eye", and "Rumours."
- Unfortunately, there’s some serious filler herein: "Real Long Distance" and "Next to the Last Romantic."
- Yet "Empty Hearts" approaches Springsteen-ian heights, and "Right Moves" would be right at home on classic rock radio.
- Overall, there are some excellent songs here, but the album feels rushed and punkish compared to the considered songwriting and starry rustic glory of The Animal Years. I think Ritter was trying to capture a live and spontaneous feel, but I don’t think he had the songs or the band to realize his ultimate vision. Not a bad shot, though.
- BONUS EP: The bonus EP included with the record consists of four experimental snippets. "Wildfires" is a worthwhile, going in a direction that Ritter would explore in more depth on So Runs the World Away. Otherwise, the tracks are really too short to make much of an impact.
